Establishment Performance of Eucalyptus mannifera Using the Tree Coach Tree Planting System.

Project Overview

The Grices Road streetscape project in Clyde North, Victoria, provided an opportunity to measure the establishment performance of newly planted Eucalyptus mannifera under a structured planting and maintenance program using Tree Coach.

A total of 38 trees were monitored over a five-month assessment period following planting. Measurements focused on:

  • trunk caliper development
  • height growth
  • structural taper formation
  • overall canopy health.

The results demonstrated exceptionally strong establishment performance, particularly in caliper development – a critical indicator of root establishment, structural stability, and long-term tree resilience.

Maintenance & Establishment Program

Trees were:

  • fed with Bush Tucker fertiliser at planting and every three months thereafter
  • watered weekly from December through March
  • watered fortnightly through April
  • watered as required following establishment.

This program was designed to prioritise:

  • root establishment
  • trunk taper formation
  • balanced canopy development
  • long-term structural performance.

Caliper Growth Results

The project produced outstanding caliper development results across the planting stock.

Key Outcomes

  • Average caliper growth:  80.43%
  • Highest caliper growth:  143.48%
  • Lowest caliper growth:  39.39%
  • Six trees exceeded 100% caliper growth

These figures indicate extremely strong establishment activity and substantial structural strengthening during the first growing period.

Importantly, growth was not isolated to height extension alone. Trees demonstrated significant trunk thickening and taper development – a key sign that dynamic movement and root anchorage were functioning correctly.

The assessment noted:

“All trees present with excellent taper revealing the supported lateral movement is happening from the ground up.”

This is a critical distinction from rigid staking systems, where trees often prioritise height growth at the expense of trunk strength and structural stability.

Height Growth Results

Height growth remained healthy and balanced throughout the establishment period.

Key Outcomes

  • Average height growth: 29.71%
  • Highest height growth: 55%
  • Lowest height growth: 6.36%

Interestingly:

52% of trees recorded height growth below 30%

Rather than indicating poor performance, this demonstrates that many trees were allocating energy toward:

  • caliper expansion
  • root development
  • taper formation
  • structural strengthening.

This is widely regarded as a more desirable establishment outcome for long-term urban tree performance.

Why Caliper Growth Matters

Traditional tree establishment methods often focus heavily on vertical growth as the primary success metric.

However, strong caliper development is one of the clearest indicators of:

  • successful root establishment
  • active reaction wood formation
  • improved wind tolerance
  • reduced future failure risk
  • enhanced self-supporting capability.

The Grices Road project highlights how allowing controlled lateral movement through dynamic support systems encourages trees to strengthen naturally from the ground up.

Structural Outcomes

At the completion of the assessment period:

  • all trees displayed healthy crown development
  • all trees exhibited strong taper formation
  • no signs of suppressed trunk development were observed
  • establishment performance was consistent across the planting cohort.

The report concluded: 

“All trees present with full and healthy crowns due to proper maintenance and care.”
